"The concept for our charity began in 1986. The local deaf community were frustrated by the lack of support for deaf and hard of hearing people in Bexley. They put a case forward to the local authority for a specialist service dedicated to helping people with hearing loss.
By 1994, Bexley Deaf Group was officially registered as a charity and was commissioned by the local authority to work alongside NHS audiologists based at South East London hospitals to help people to maintain their hearing aids and to distribute batteries.
We now offer many more services and activities, details of which can be found on our website. These services are accessed on average over 10,000 times every year.
We are now one of the leading centres for teaching British Sign Language (BSL) in South East England. All of our staff, and many of our volunteers are either native BSL users or are qualified to BSL level 2 or higher.
Having had a presence in the London Borough of Bexley for over 30 years, we are now recognised as a valuable local resource by the local authority, the NHS, voluntary sector colleagues and the community. We will always uphold our aims and objectives as a charity by advocating and campaigning for deaf and hard of hearing people to ensure that they have equal access to services and activities and can receive information in a format they can understand."
