KIDS - National support
|
KIDS is a leading disabled children’s charity that has been in existence for over 40 years working to enable disabled children and young people and their families to enjoy their lives.
We work with and support children and young people from birth to the age of 25 who are disabled, that is they have a physical, sensory or mental impairment (including mental illness) which in interaction with social, attitudinal and environmental constraints, creates barriers which hinder their full and equal participation in society.
Our work helps disabled children and young people to gain independence, social skills and self confidence. The young people we support have impairments or conditions that can make it very difficult to access other services. We help to ensure that the life skills work taught in schools is reinforced in social settings and reduces the likelihood of isolation and loneliness.
But it is not only just the disabled child or young person that our work helps. To families, both parents and siblings, the emotional support that KIDS and its staff provide is invaluable in their day to day lives.
This falls into three streams:
Early Years
Early Years is about working with babies and young children from birth to five and includes encouraging children to play together and have fun while also promoting motor skills and communication development as well as supporting parents to help them develop skills in caring for the needs of their child. Find out more....
School Years
These services focus on children of school age. They can be educationally based, purely play and leisure activities or a combination of both. Some also focus on providing respite for the family which can relieve the strain on the family and reduce stress on parents while giving the child or young person an opportunity to get away from the family home, enjoy new experiences. Find out more....
Transition into adulthood
KIDS’ transitions services directly support young disabled people to make the transition from adolescence to adulthood: a time when a lot of the support they are able to receive may be coming to an end. Find out more....
We also provide support to the individuals who are affected by this situation (such as parents, siblings and young carers) through Family Support which includes Keyworking, SEND IASSs (formally Parent Partnership Services) and SEN Mediation and Disagreement Resolution Services. Find out more....
